A climbing species violet
This plant is in the "awkward adolescent" stage of growth, the leaf size hasn't caught up with the stem length yet. I believe this clone does tend toward being more rangy than some other species clones. The leaves are currently near round, quilted and are quite fuzzy. The stems are sort of a hard to describe dark ruddy color, which is very decorative. There is a blush of wine color on the underside of the leaves where they meet the stems. Unfortunately I see no flowers or buds yet. It is easy to see why this was consider a different species from S. ionantha at one point, it has been reclassified as a subspecies. The larger S. grotei clones are supposed to be climbing plants in their native habitat. I am hoping to eventually have it grow up a slab of cork bark. After examining this young plant and seeing how sturdy it is I have no problem imaging it climbing up rough rock faces in it's native habitat.
